In Brazil, where the ocean shapes both culture and identity, a new era of paddlesports is rising, and few embody this movement as powerfully as Ulisses Calenti. Entrepreneur, producer, and dedicated Va’a athlete, Ulisses has spent more than a decade building bridges between passion, performance, and community. From São Paulo to the windswept coastline of Vitória, his journey reflects the evolution of Brazilian ocean racing itself: bold, fast-growing, and deeply connected to the sea. Today, as the official distributor of Nalu in Brazil, he plays a key role in bringing world-class composite technology to a nation hungry for excellence. We sat down with Ulisses to explore his roots, his vision, and the future he sees for Brazil on the global stage.
Hi Ulises, could you please introduce yourself and tell us a bit about your background?
English: Hello, of course. My name is Ulisses Calenti, entrepreneur, producer, and Va’a athlete since 2011. I was born in São Paulo and have been living in Vitória, Espírito Santo, for the past 20 years. Over time, I’ve dedicated both my professional and personal life to the ocean community, contributing to the sport’s development while staying active as an athlete.

Do you have a personal connection to the ocean or to paddle sports?
English: Absolutely. I’ve always been passionate about outdoor and extreme sports, and my connection to the ocean started early. I began practicing water sports at the age of 14, and it quickly became a lifestyle. Since then, I’ve immersed myself in everything the ocean offers, Va’a, Surfski, Windsurf, Offshore Sailing, Diving… If it involves the sea, I’m always ready to jump in. The ocean has shaped me both as an athlete and as a person.
Could you tell us more about the ocean racing culture in Brazil and how it’s evolving?
English: Brazil is currently one of the strongest nations in ocean racing, and the growth across many disciplines has been remarkable. In Va’a specifically, the last five years have shown explosive development, with hundreds of new clubs opening along the coastline and more athletes joining the sport every year. But this movement isn’t limited to Va’a, Brazil also stands out in Surfski, Sailing, Kite Surf, Wing Foil, and many other ocean disciplines. The country is experiencing a true watersports boom, driven by passionate athletes, clubs, and major events.
What motivated you to become Nalu’s official distributor in Brazil?
English: With the rapid evolution of paddlesports in Brazil, it was only natural that premium international brands would eventually enter the market. Until recently, athletes mostly used national Va’a canoes, which didn’t match the technological excellence of brands like Nalu. We faced limitations: heavier canoes, lower durability, and higher costs for the performance offered. Today, with Nalu’s arrival, everything has changed. Brazilian athletes now have access to advanced composite technologies such as Carbon Prepreg cured in Autoclave, providing elite performance, durability, and precision. That’s what motivated me bringing world-class equipment to a country with world-class potential.
What is your strategy to introduce and grow Nalu’s presence in Brazil, through events, ambassadors, or retail partnerships?
