Hawaiki Nui Va’a, the largest outrigger canoe race in French Polynesia
The Hawaiki Nui Va’a has become one of the most iconic sporting events of the year, attracting Tahitians as well as paddling enthusiasts from across the South Pacific. Raced in both solo and team formats, this outrigger canoe (va’a) event is a true proving ground for Tahitian paddlers, who dominate the discipline on the international stage.
More than 2,000 canoes line up for this demanding 80-mile race, contested over three days between the islands of Huahine, Raiatea, Taha’a and Bora Bora. Hundreds of supporters follow the action from boats or gather on the legendary Matira Beach in Bora Bora, home to the finish line. This gruelling race highlights the athletes’ physical and tactical skills, while reminding visitors that Polynesians were pioneers of ocean navigation across the South Pacific.
The Hawaiki Nui Va’a also offers a unique opportunity to discover the Society Islands: Huahine; Raiatea, home to the emblematic Taputapuātea site, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site; Taha’a, a central hub for canoe rentals; and of course the legendary Bora Bora. Each island comes alive to welcome crews, friends and families in a warm atmosphere, with festive evenings that preserve and celebrate the traditional Polynesian way of life.
